Abstract

Introduction: Antioxidant compounds of plant origin represent an important source of bioactive compounds for the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries. Hence the increase of researches related to methods of processing and evaluation of efficacy. Punica granatum (pomegranate) is a species of wide geographical distribution ; it is used in the traditional medicine of several countries and is rich in phenolic compounds. Among the pharmacological activities of this fruit’s peel extract are antioxidant, antimutagenic, anticancer, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities.

Objective: Carry out a systematic review on the influence of the extraction method on the antioxidant activity of the aqueous extract of Punica granatum (pomegranate).

Methods: The review was conducted from April to September 2020 with articles published between 2015 and 2020 on the Portal Periódicos da Capes, in Portuguese, English and Spanish languages. Specialized databases and keyword combinations were used for the Virtual Library on Health (Bireme) Lilac.

Conclusions: Phenolic compounds are associated with the antioxidant power of Punica granatum (romã). However, other compounds, such as carotenoids, may also contribute to the antioxidant potential of this fruit.
