Introduction: The microbiota may be altered due to the use of antibiotics for the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal environment. Probiotic supplementation could be used therapeutically to regulate or prevent this dysbiosis.
Objective: To analyze the outstanding information on the use of probiotics as an adjuvant in antibiotic treatment in diseases of the gastrointestinal environment that may alter their microbiota.
Methods: Bibliographic review in scientific databases of articles related to the topic and published between January 2010 and June 2020. 132 articles were found, 43 were included after meeting the selection criteria, and scientific and methodological relevance.
Conclusions: The use of certain probiotics is recommended to treat antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Clostridiumdifficile infection and prevention of its associated diarrhea, and Helicobater pylori infection, but is not recommended for inflammation of the ileoanal reservoir. The probiotic recommendation should be prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional. Studies with better methodological designs are still required to achieve formulations focused on personalized therapy.
