Abstract

Introduction: Vaginal candidiasis is a frequent gynecological disease in women, 40% of them evolve to chronicity, being in these cases recurrent and resistant to usual treatments which produces a negative impact on their quality of life.

Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of ozone therapy in a patient with recurrent vaginal candidiasis resistant to conventional pharmacological treatment.

Methods: Data were obtained from medical history. A pre-treatment study was indicated, it was detected in direct vaginal swab and positive culture of Candida albicans and elevated glucose. Medicinal ozone was administered from the Azur Trujillo Ozone Center by vaginal insufflation and ozonated oil on the vulva for 20 sessions. In addition, the patient´s partner was given ozonated oil. Diabetes mellitus was diagnosed which was treated with metformin (tablet 850 mg), 1 tablet after breakfast and dinner.

Results: At the end of the treatment there was total resolution of the clinical picture and the direct vaginal swab and culture were negative; glucose was normalized.

Conclusions: Ozone therapy is an alternative treatment for recurrent vaginal candidiasis, which is why it is recommended to carry out other studies with a greater number of patients.
