Introduction: Bidens pilosa L. is an annual herb from South America that is widely spread throughout the world, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The rich phytochemical composition of Bidens pilosa allows it to be used for the treatment of more than 41 types of diseases in humans and animals.
Objective: Show through scientific evidence published in recent years, the broad therapeutic spectrum of Bidens pilosa L.
Methods: A review of the literature published in the period 2011-2021, in English and Spanish, available in Scielo, Scopus, Pubmed/Medline and Mediagraphic repositories was carried out. Google Scholar search engine was used. A total of 142 documents were obtained in abstracts and full texts, of which 50 were selected for the study, of which 82% were published in the last 5 years.
Conclusions: The knowledge generated in recent years about the pharmacological properties of Bidens pilosa L. supports its wide traditional use and opens paths to obtain products with marked therapeutic potential. The wide spectrum of medicinal properties that it possesses places this plant as a source of active metabolites that can be used, not only to treat a pathological state, but to prevent its development.
